F. Scott Fitzgerald

F. Scott Fitzgerald is the author of The Great Gatsby. The Great Gatsby was one of the
most famous books that he has ever written. That book was dedicated to his wife Zelda and one

of the main characters, Daisy in The Great Gatsby is supposed to be her. Fitzgerald was born on

September 24, 1896 and he died of a heart attack on December 21, 1940. The Love of the Last

Tycoon was the last book he ever wrote before he died. Fitzgerald was an alcoholic, and his wife

Zelda suffered a relapse in February of 1932 and stayed the rest of her life in sanitariums until

she died in a fire at Highland Hospital in 1948. Fitzgerald's real name is Francis Scott Key

Fitzgerald and he was born in Minnesota and died in Hollywood, California. His parent's names

were Edward and Mary. F. Scott Fitzgerald was also in the army, and he joined in 1917 and

became a liutenant in the infantry. He was very famous and was is one of the best writers of his

time. He spent alot of his life living in hotels and he and Zelda spent all their money every time

they got it. The book The Great Gatsby is based off of their love because when Fitzgerald was

young he joined in the army but he discharged from it and he went off to go make a fortune in

order for Zelda to marry him, but she couldn't wait so she broke off the engagement because she

couldn't wait and because he was poor and she couldn't live that way. So Fitzgerald went off to

become rich in order to get her love back and so that they could marry just like Jay Gatsby and
Daisy.

The Great Gatsby Film Version.

The Great Gatsby has many different films made we have watch the 1974 and the 2000 one.

In the 1974 film version they go more along with the book then with the 2000 one. In this one they have better design and clothes that actually match the era not just a sort-of-rip off. The characters are more like in the book, this is how you would picture them. Except for Daisy she is a bit annoying in this film then in the other.

In the 200 one they foreshadow by showing you stuff from the future and the past. The characters except for Nick are a bit different then how you would picture them in the book. In this version Nick is actually more likable thenin the 74 one but in both versions they capture Nicks character.

The Green Light

The green light resembles the closeness and that little part that
Gatsby had to being close to Daisy. Gatsby lived in West Egg in a
giant mansion and Daisy lived just across the bay; and during the
night across the bay Gatsby could see that light across the bay
from the dock. That green light meant alot to him, because it was a
way that he knew how close Daisy was to him and he watched that green light almost
everynight. Gatsby moved to West Egg because he was in love with Daisy and because he was
still in love with Daisy after all those years of waiting to see her after he got back from the war.
He moved closer because he was now rich and before she wouldn't marry him because he was
poor. He moved so that he could let her know that he was aliveand so that maybe she would one
night go to one of his fancy paties and that hopefully he would run into her again but that didn't
happen, but he ended up meeting somebody who knew her then he got to meet her again and
they had to be with each other again. Gatsby impressed her with all of his expansive nice things
and his big house and he tried to win her over and get her to leave Tom. That light resembled
their closeness and like in a way hwo that light was always on, it remembled kind of like how
their love was still going on and that they still wanted to be with each other.

Dan Cody

Dan Cody is the man that showed Gatsby how to become rich in his get-rich-quick schemes. Gatsby met him by helping him tie down his yacht because a storm was coming and could have killed him. Cody took him in like if he was his son. He was involved in the transactions in Montana copper this is what made Cody into a millionaire.

Dan Cody dies later on and Gatsby inherits all his money but Gatsby decides to give some of the money to Cody's Mistress Ella Kaye. During him knowing Cody he changed his name from James Gatz of North Dakota to Jay Gatsby of West Egg Long Island.

Gatsby never drinks in his parties because of Cody. Cody was a mad drunk and an alcoholic he hated seeing him like this so he never drank to afraid to see if he was a mad drunk or an alcoholic.

East vs. West Egg

East vs. West Egg is pretty much rich vs. poor but in the story there really isn't a battle between both its just a statement that all the rich live on one side of the river and all the poor on the other.

East Egg is were all the fancy rich people live. In the East egg Daisy, Tom and probably Jordan live. They live there because they are considered rich and have good paying jobs. This was used as a barrier between Daisy and Gatsby as an example of how there love is, separated. I believe this was also used for Jordan and Nick because they wont get so close to each other because they both know that Nick doesn't have so much money, this was probably used for Tom and Myrtle too.

The West Egg is were Nick and Gatsby live. This is were the lower class lives, the less rich or poor. But you could also be rich but you just don't know were your life is headed yet so those people come and live here. Like Gatsby but he lives there because he wants to be across from Daisy. Also so his parties can be a little "private."

The Women of Gatsby

The women of The Great Gastby include Daisy, Jordan, and Mrs.
Wilson. Mrs.Wilson is married to George Wilson who owns a car repair shop
and sells cars. She cheats on her husband with Tom who is married to Daisy.
Mrs.wilson lives in West Egg and she is poor. She wants a lot of nice things
and she makes Tom get her a puppy. She knows that Tom is married to Daisy but she wants
Tom and they want to get married.

Daisy is married to Tom. She married Tom after she met Gatsby and after he left for war.
She meets him again and she is still in love with him. She goes to his mansion a lot and spends a
lot time with Gatsby when they meet again. When Daisy and Gatsby meet again their excited
but like nervous and shy at the same time. She was really in love with Gatsby when she first met
him when he was a soldier but she wouldn't marry him back then becuase he was poor. Daisy is
still in love with Gatsby, but she is also still in love with her husband Tom who Gatsby doesn't
like very much. Daisy is rich and lives in East Egg. She doesn't drink and is always focused on
impressing others and setting a good reputation. She's overly dramatic and she has a child with
Tom.

Jordon Baker is a friend to like everyone. She is very careful and she's sort of witty. Jordon
is polite and she helps out with everyone and with their issues. She is the first person that
Gatsby meets who knows Daisy. He asks her for help like getting Nick to invite Daisy to tea for
him. She fills people in with what's going on. Nick has like a thing for Jordon and she kind of has a
thing for him. Jordon plays in sports which is unlike what other girls did. Miss Baker isn't
married and she is sort of close friends with Daisy.

The Men of Gatsby

Many of the men of The Great Gatsby are alike and different. Gatsby is
in love Daisy. He fell in love with her before he left off to go fight in war when
he was a soldier. He buys a house in West Egg right next to Nick and he
wants Nick to invite Daisy over for tea because he wants to see Daisy again
because he hasn't seen her in so long. Everythign that Gatsby buys and does
is to impress Daisy and because he wants to win her over and have her back in his life.

Dan Cody was Gatsby's best friend. Dan is the main reason why Gatsby became so rich and
popular and stuff. Dan Cody is dead.

Nick lives right next door to Gatsby. He helps Gatsby out by inviting daisy over for tea so
that he can meet Daisy again. He's on like everyones side and he doesn't have any enemies. Nick
pretty much gets along with everyone. He's poor and lives in West Egg. He's got a thing for
Jordan.

Tom is married to Daisy but he's not really in love with her anymore.Tom is cheating on
Daisy with another girl that he wants to be with and marry which is Mrs.Wilson. Tom is rich and
he lives in East Egg.

George B. Wilson owns a car repair shop and also sells cars. His wife is cheating on him with
Tom and he doesn't know about it. George kills Gatsby.

The Green Light

The green light is suppose to represent the love that Gatsby and Daisy have. It represents that no matter how far they are from each other they can still keep the love fumes burning.

It also represents that Gatsby keeps holding on to that one dream hoping and wishing for it to come true that he will live happily forever with daisy and not so faraway that they can actually have a future life together not just a past and a hope that never happened.

The Green Light is sort of like a light house at the end of the dock across the east and west egg. They have it there so boats can come easily to the east egg without crashing. Gatsby always stares at this to remind him of the times he would spend with Daisy.

Unrequited Love

Unrequited love is when one person loves somebody and that
person that they love doesn't love them back. Such as Gatsby, he was in
love with Daisy and Daisy said that she loved him but she didn't really
love him. her love was fake, such as proof where she tells Gatsby that
she married Tom because, " rich girls don't marry poor boys." That just
shows that she didn't really love him. If Daisy really loved Gatsby so much then she would've
waited for him and married him instead on Tom wether he was poor or rich.

But unrequinted love can influence people to do so many things to impress that person and
get them to like them or ever fall in love with them. Gatsby went throught he trouble of trying to
get Nick to get Daisy to come to tea just so that Gatsby could show Daisy his house and impress
her with how big and nice his house was and how expensive things were in his house and stuff. I
think Gatsby and Daisy show a great example of unrequinted love.

Selfish People

In this world we have people that will help us out with any problem that we have on our hands. But there is also people in the world that only care for themselves and that's all they will ever understand they will always know how to love themselves but not others. Selfishness is only caring about u, me myself and i.

In this book The Great Gatsby Tom is considered selfish because he only cares about his happiness and not his wife's, Daisy's happiness. He has a "not-so-secret-lover" and loves her more to death than his actual wife. He also just sees the world threw his eyes and no one Else's he is very abusive and angry.

People like this would do anything to see themselves happy. They might even steal candy from a baby because they like that candy and they want it and if someone has something they want they must have it there like little kids and a new shiny toy.

Jealousy

Jealousy can lead to many things, even if their heart
breaking things. Wether it is in a relationship, or someone, or
something. Between two people in a relationship, it may lead to
fights, break ups, and divorces. It could be over cheating, or like if someone wants to be with
another person. It drives people to think crazy things. People who feel jealousy alot may not tell
the people thier with or talk to a friend about how they feel, so they start questioning the people
their with, with rediculous questions even if that person may be innocent. But of course, no one
wants to admit that they are a jealous person. Also, it may lead people to be insecure about
themselves, and it can make people not be able to trust the people that they are with. Like many
people, they try not to feel that way, but they can't help but feel it because it is just part of
everyone's human emotions. Jealousy though, it is a major reason why many relationships never
last and people just split.

1920's

The 1920s were all about expressing yourself and not letting anyone tell you what to do, it was about being free. For most women this was a had to happen year. This is when all women started being what they wanted to be not what there husbands were expecting them to be they went to parties and left without any men telling them that they were pretty much there's and couldn't go.

In this year we also had the great depression but we also had some very important breakout inventions like the car by Henry Ford, radio by Ernst Alexanderson, TV by Ernst Alexanderson, and also movies were being introduced to keep people entertained and not worry about the economy to let them wander of into a world of imagination.

Women started dressing differently and was considered showing "to much skin" they made new bathing suits that were shorter and easier to swim with. Back then some mothers were outraged that there daughters would dress like this but times were changing and the world was becoming more and more advanced and without that time we wouldn't be like how we are today.

Mafia / Gangsters

During the 1920's prohibition there was a huge ban on
alcohol. Agents tried to get rid of it, and people started up a big
business selling it. These people were known as mafias and
gangsters. Such as Al Capone, who was a famous prohibition
gangster from Chicago.

Capone destroyed all of his competition and sold alcohol to
build a business. Of course this business he had going led to
the big bucks. Many gangsters like Al Capone and others used
many sources to scare off agents who had threatened them. Obviously though, the government
had a really hard time in the 1920's trying to get rid of alcohol with allthe gangsters and the
mafias around which is one of the big reasons why the prohibition failed. But many agents who
tried to get rid of speakeasies which were illegal bars that served alcohol were scared and
threatened alot by people who were gangsters and people in the mafia.

For mafias and gangsters, the prohibition mean a new way of making money. They created
jobs and were fahionable by the way that they had dressed and for the cars they rode in. With
the gangstersand mafia they created easy money, prostitution, and a new way of making crime
grow bigger.

prohibition

Prohibition in the 1920s was made to stop "corruption" in towns. But prohibition is what started spreading corruption. People started making there own alcohol and selling it to secret bars these were called "speakeasies". More people consumed alcohol then when they didn't have the ban of alcohol. The alcohol that was made wasn't good to drink they were mostly suppose to be used as medicine for example a type of whisky but the people really didn't care. The only type of alcohol that people were allowed to make in there house was wine and hard cider.

A lot of towns didn't try stopping them from making there own liquor or opening secret bars they just let it slid. Later on politicians admitted to drinking home made liquor. Many wineries were shut down because of the prohibition. All the money that was made went to gangsters or to the mafia. That's when we start seeing more of them. They caused a lot of destruction around the towns trying to get more money they were called "bootleggers".

In 1933 the legislator of the state made the twenty-first amendment to stop the prohibition. But some states still kept prohibition about two thirds made there own local opinion so the towns people had to vote to either keep the prohibition or not. At one point 38% of people lived still with the prohibition.By the end of 1966 all states had stopped the prohibition.

Flappers were part of what is known as the Roaring Twenties. This
was a period of time when women were voting as much as men were. Also
this was a period when more women were out of the kitchens and working
in all of the men's jobs when the men were fighting out in World War I. But
of course, many of these working women lost their jobs when all of the
men came back from fighting in the war.

The flappers were different from the modern day women in the 1920's. They didn't stay
home and cook nor clean and they did not depend on the men to take care of everything. They
were more like rebellious and carefree women that did what they wanted. They wanted equality
with men, even in their relationships.

They denied the traditional way of life for women. But of course many of the older people
of the 1920's thought that that new lifestyle and that new fashion those flappers had was a way
of rebellion and they dissaproved of them. They way their attitude and behavior was, was more
carefree and rebellious than the way of modern women of that time would have acted. They
changed their fashion and way of life which older people dissaproved of. Women cut their hair off
to the point where it was really short. They also started wearing lots of makeup; many elderly
people called them white nosed women. Flappers would also smoke ciggarettes and drink alcohol
at clubs. These women chose this lifestyle because they thought of it as like a way of their
freedom and their independence. But not all flappers dressed or acted that way, and not all
American women were flappers. Overall, the flappers were one of the big symbols of the Roaring
Twenties.
